Nissan Car Key Replacement: What Type of Key Does Your Nissan Use?
Not every Nissan key is the same, and knowing which type you have matters for both the service process and the final quote. Older Nissan models — think early-2000s Frontiers or Sentras — used a basic metal blade with a transponder chip embedded in the head. That chip communicates with the vehicle's immobilizer; without a correctly coded chip, the engine will not start even if the cut matches perfectly. Mid-range models such as many Altima and Maxima trims moved to remote head keys, which combine the transponder blade with lock/unlock buttons in a single unit.
Newer models — including most current Rogue, Murano, and Pathfinder trims — use Intelligent Key fobs that allow push-button starting and keyless entry without ever inserting a blade. These require programming through the OBD-II port using current dealer-level software, which our mobile units carry. If you have found yourself dealing with a Nissan Rogue locked keys in car situation, or your Altima's fob has simply stopped communicating with the vehicle, call (609) 507-2749 and a technician will confirm what your specific model needs before dispatching.
